History:
In March 2020, All Elite Wrestling (AEW) established the AEW TNT Championship as a secondary championship for the men's division, named after the TNT television network, owned by WarnerMedia. In May 2021, it was announced that AEW's flagship program, AEW Dynamite, would be moving from TNT to the network's sister channel, TBS, also owned by Warner Bros. Discovery (formerly WarnerMedia), in January 2022, while AEW's other core program, AEW Rampage, would remain on TNT, with AEW later adding AEW Collision on TNT in June 2023. Despite AEW Dynamite moving to TBS, wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported that the AEW TNT Championship would not be renamed. Then-AEW Executive Vice President and wrestler Cody Rhodes also affirmed that there were no plans in place for a separate AEW TBS Championship for male wrestlers. It was later reported that the promotion would introduce a secondary women's championship and that it would be called the AEW TBS Championship.
Prior to the October 6th, 2021 special second anniversary episode of AEW Dynamite, AEW President and Chief Executive Officer Tony Khan said there would be a major announcement made on the show. During the episode, AEW commentator Tony Schiavone and referee Aubrey Edwards officially unveiled the AEW TBS Championship as a secondary championship for the women's division. AEW announced that the inaugural champion would be determined by a single-elimination style tournament. The tournament bracket was revealed on the October 22nd, 2021 episode of AEW Rampage with a 12-woman field. The tournament itself began on the October 23rd, 2021 special Saturday Night episode of AEW Dynamite and concluded on the January 5th, 2022 episode which was AEW Dynamite's debut broadcast on TBS after having aired on sister channel TNT since it's first episode in October 2019. In the tournament final, Jade Cargill defeated Ruby Soho to become the inaugural AEW TBS Champion.
Cargill had a dominant reign as AEW TBS Champion, having defeated practically every woman on the roster and she remained undefeated for an astonishing 508 days as she racked up win after win. Cargill would hold onto the title until she lost it to a returning Kris Statlander in an impromptu match at AEW Double or Nothing 2023 after she had previously successfully defended the title moments prior against Taya Valkyrie. This loss marked Cargill's first of two losses in her AEW career. Both of which came at the hands of Kris Statlander. Cargill would take a 4 month hiatus from AEW until she returned to get a rematch with Statlander on the September 15th, 2023 episode of AEW Rampage. As previously noted, Cargill was also unsuccessful in that match as well.
Following her second loss to Statlander, Cargill would announce she was leaving AEW and joining WWE. Statlander would go on to become a fighting champion, defending the title week after week in open challenge matches. She has currently defended the title 14 times (as of November 8th, 2023) and as of that same date has held the title for 161 days.
