History of Anarchy in the Arena

All Elite Wrestling has had a total of 3 different "Anarchy in the Arena" matches. The 'Anarchy in the Arena' match came about as a main event match for AEW's flagship pay-per-view Double or Nothing, after two successful years of hosting "Stadium Stampede" matches, in 2020 and 2021, respectively.

The Stadium Stampede match happened as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions that was put on the company in terms of having events in front of little to no fans. AEW took the disadvantage of being without fans and made it into an advantage when they had the first 'Stadium Stampede' match in 2020. In 2021, with the pandemic still going on, AEW had a 2nd 'Stadium Stampede' match. AEW returned to live touring in July 2021 and thus, was back to full crowds by the time AEW Double or Nothing 2022 came around in May 2022.

Instead of a 'Stadium Stampede' match,  All Elite Wrestling decided to have an 'Anarchy in the Arena' match, which is basically a multi-team 'Empty Arena' match, without the 'Empty Arena'. The 1st 'Anarchy in the Arena' match took place at the 2022 Double or Nothing pay-per-view and pitted Blackpool Combat Club and friends against Chris Jericho and the Jericho Appreciation Society.

The match would return in 2023 for the annual Double or Nothing pay-per-view event, where Blackpool Combat Club (Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli, Bryan Danielson and Wheeler Yuta) faced The Elite (Kenny Omega, The Young Bucks (Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson) and 'Hangman' Adam Page. This marked the 1st time all of The Elite were a team again since they teamed up for the first-ever 'Stadium Stampede' match at the 2020 Double or Nothing pay-per-view event.

In 2024, the match would make it's return for the 3rd time, this time with The Elite (Kazuchika Okada, Jack Perry and The Young Bucks (Matthew Jackson and Nicholas Jackson)) facing Team AEW (Darby Allin, Bryan Danielson and FTR (Cash Wheeler and Dax Harwood)).
